Biography

Majd Mastoura is a rising Tunisian actor with over ten years of acting experience under his belt who was exposed to theater, literature, and politics since a young age, all of which ignited his passion for the arts, prompting him to join a theater club at the young age of 11. Majd is also an avid reader of literary works, with Khalil Gibran and Naguib Mahfouz being among his favorite writers.

In 2012, he hosted his first spoken-word poetry event in Tunisia, which he dubbed ‘Street Poetry’, working on it with his close friend Amine Gharbi annually until 2014.

Majd eventually made his acting debut in 2014 in Jilani Saâdi’s BIDOUN 2, and two years later, he got his breakthrough playing the titular role in Mohamed Ben Attia’s HEDI.

The role earned him a Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, a Best Arab Actor Award at the Arab Critics’ Awards during the Cannes Film Festival, a Best Actor in a Leading Role Award at the 2016 Carthage Film Festival, and a nomination for Best Actor at the Trophées Francophones du Cinéma.

Mastoura then featured in Raja Amari’s FOREIGN BODY before performing a dance number with Tunisian choreographer Radhouane El-Meddeb at the Avignon Festival in 2017.

His other work includes Manele Labidi’s ARAB BLUES, Majdi Lakhdar’s BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE, Samuel Doux’s DUNE DREAMS, and Léonor Serraille’s MOTHER AND SON. He has also worked in several short films, including CHARTER, OBVIOUS OFFSIDE, AFTER THE NIGHT, and 24 TRUTHS.

Most recently, Mastoura has had an exceptional 2023, starring in Kaouther Ben Hania’s FOUR DAUGHTERS — which world premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival and is the Tunisian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards — and Mohamed Ben Attia’s BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS, which world premiered at the Horizons Section of the Venice International Film Festival and recently held its Arab World premiere at the third Red Sea International Film Festival.

His acting career aside, Mastoura is also a derja (Tunisian Arabic) writer and translator, with his most prominent project being localizing the French philosophical work La Chose Publique.
