Biography
Wael Hamdy has been a professional screenwriter for over 20 years, during which he wrote and co-wrote over 20 diverse works across both cinema and television.
These works include MIKANO, MOGA HARRA, RAS AL-GHOUL, SOQOOT HOR, AL TOFAN, TELEAT ROHI, SAFAR BARLIK, and of course HEPTA: THE LAST LECTURE, which later became the most successful romantic film in the history of the Egyptian box office and earned Hamdy the Best Screenplay Award at the Egyptian National Film Festival.
Hamdy's latest works include Amir Ramses’s drama feature A NOSE AND THREE EYES — which is an adaptation of Ihsan Abdel-Quddous's novel. The film world premiered at The Red Sea International Festival and was released to great commercial success in Egyptian cinemas. It also won the Audience Award at the Malmö Arab Film Festival in Sweden.
Wael also co-wrote Akram Hosny’s TV series BABA GEH, which aired during Ramadan 2024, and MOFTARAQ TOROQ, which began streaming on Shahid in the same year and became one of the most-watched series on the platform.
His second short film INSHALLAH EL DONIA TETHAD was also screened at international short film festivals such as Palm Springs and Cleveland in the same year. The film is also set to screen at the 55th Nashville Film Festival later in September.
Hamdy discovered his passion for the arts halfway through pursuing an engineering degree, promptly changing majors amd graduating in 1998 with honors, becoming one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a professional screenwriter.
He started his career in screenwriting by participating in the writing workshop for ALAM SIMSIM — the Egyptian version of the famous American children's show Sesame Street — which he later led from 2006 onwards.
He then contributed to writing some of the most successful sitcoms at the beginning and peak of this genre's popularity, including TAMER WE SHAWQIYA, THE CLINIC, as well as the short series AHMED ETGAWEZ MONA, aside from those, Hamdy also led the writing team for other significant projects, most notably EL BAB FI EL BAB, the Egyptian version of the American sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.
In addition to comedy, Hamdy wrote the dramatic outline, screenplay, and dialogue for some of the most well-known dramas, including RAS AL-GHOUL, starring the late Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, SOQOOT HOR starring star Nelly Karim, and AL TOFAN, directed by the great Khairy Beshara.
Hamdy also co-wrote the series MOGA HARRA, one of the most successful and popular dramas in recent years, adapted from a story by great writer Osama Anwar Okasha and directed by Mohamed Yassin.
When it comes to cinema, Wael Hamdy skillfully traversed between different genres, presenting psychological drama in MIKANO and romance in HEPTA: THE LAST LECTURE. He also wrote the screenplay for the short film NIGHT SHIFT, which resonated strongly with audiences after its release on YouTube.
Wael Hamdy is considered one of the most prominent script workshop developers and supervisors in recent years. In 2017, he supervised the Birthmark Workshop for developing cinematic films, with BASHTERY RAGEL becoming its first production.
In 2022, he supervised the Saudi-Kuwaiti drama development workshop 6x6, hosted by the National Creative Industries Foundation in collaboration with Netflix and the New York Film Academy in Kuwait City. He also supervised the second edition of the same workshop, which started in April 2024.
Wael also gained experience in journalism as an editor and film critic, working for various Arab newspapers and magazines. He also served as the Managing Editor of the GoodNews Cinema magazine from 2003 to 2007.
