Biography
Marwan Hamed is an Egyptian prominent filmmaker who possesses an extensively auspicious repertoire that extends over 20 years of experience in producing and directing films, in addition to directing over 300 commercials, TV drama series, and music videos. His debut feature The Yacoubian Building (2006) screened at some of the world's most prestigious film festivals, including the Berlin International Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.
In 2014, Marwan directed The Blue Elephant which reaped several awards at many film festivals like the Best Director and Best Film awards at the Annual Film Society Festival For Egyptian Cinema, the Special Jury Award at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF), and many more.
He directed the film’s second installment Blue Elephant: Dark Whispers in 2019, which dominated the Egyptian box office at the time.
In 2019, Hamed presided over the Short Film Competition jury at the El Gouna Film Festival. Recently, he has been picked by the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation to deliver a master class to educate young Saudi filmmakers about filmmaking and how to take steps to turn their vision into reality.
Marwan Hamed's latest film is KIRA & EL GIN, which shattered Egyptian box office records with revenues exceeding EGP 120M, becoming the highest-grossing film in the history of Egyptian cinema at the time of its release.
Hamed is currently filming for his newest project; Synergy’s latest feature EL SETT, an Um Kalthoum biopic starring Mona Zaki and Mohamed Farag.
The director was also chosen as an advisory board member for the El Gouna Film Festival.
Before that, Hamed was crowned with a Career Achievement Award at the sixth El Gouna Film Festival for his track record of making impressive blockbusters and setting new standards in the Egyptian film industry for audio-visual storytelling.
