Ashraf Abdel Baky is a multi‑talented Egyptian artist whose career spans over four decades and includes more than 173 works across cinema, television, and theater. Known for his distinctive comedic style, sharp artistic intelligence, and ability to create characters rooted in social realities, he is widely recognized as one of the artists who redefined contemporary Egyptian comedy.
He began performing in childhood, quickly drawing attention with early stage and cinematic appearances in the late 1980s and early 1990s, laying the foundation for a career defined by versatility, creativity, and longevity.
In cinema, Ashraf’s career began with films such as LAYLAT EL QABD ‘ALA BAKIZA W ZAGHLOUL (1988), SAMAK LABAN TAMR HENDY (1988), JAHIM TAHT EL MA’A (1989), AL-MOATEN MASRY (1991), EL EHRAB WEL KEBAB (1992), LEH YA BANAFSEG (1993), ICE CREAM FE GLIM (1992), AY AY (1992), WATCH OUT FOR AZZOUZ (1992), and ASHYAK WAD FI ROXI (1999).
Throughout the 2000s, he starred in RASHA GAREAA (2001), SAHEB SAHBO (2002), HOB EL BANAT (2004), KHALI MIN EL CHOLESTEROL (2005), and ALA GANB YASTA (2008), consolidating his reputation as an actor whose comedy resonates with audiences of all ages. His later film projects include MEEN YASADAQ (2024), AL SADA AL AFADAL (2025), HEPTA 2: AL MONATHARA AL AKHEERA (2025), and DA SOT EH DA! (2026), a short film available on YouTube, demonstrating his continued relevance in Egyptian cinema.
Ashraf’s television career is equally extensive. He appeared in YOUMIAT ZAWG MO’ASER (2003), MIN GHIR MIA’AD (2006), and became widely known for his role as “Adel” in RAGEL W SET SETAT (2006–2016). In 2009, he played the role of the legendary Ismail Yassine in the biopic ABU DAHKA GENAN, honoring one of Egypt’s greatest comedians and actors of the 1950s and 1960s. He also starred in MISH ALF LEILA W LEILA (2010) and A’ELAT ZIZO (2017).
More recent television projects include GAT SALEEMA (2023), GAWLA AKHEERA (2024), ANA WE HIYA (2025), WALAD BENT SHAYEB (2025), and ALBI WE MUFTAHAHU (2025), reflecting his versatility and enduring connection with audiences across generations.
Theater has remained a central part of Abdel Baky’s career, beginning with his early performances and culminating in the founding of MASRAH MASR, a project that revitalized comedic theater for a new generation and launched the careers of many young comedians. In 2018, he restored and reopened the historic Naguib El Rihani Theater, transforming its deteriorated state into an artistic challenge.
Later, in 2024, he established the Succès Theater initiative to support young talents and independent troupes in acting and stand-up comedy, giving them a platform to perform at El Rihani Theater in downtown Cairo. He also founded and directs Masrah El Saudia, a version of Masrah Masr staged in Saudi Arabia.
His notable stage productions include KHASHAB EL WARD (1987), WELAD RAYA WA SEKENA (1990), BESHWESH (1990), SABAK EL SA‘A 12 (1991), SAYARAT EL HANEM (1992), BALLO (1995), RUD QARDI (1999), LAMA BABA YNAM (2003), and multiple seasons of MASRAH MASR (TEATRO MASR).
He also directed and performed alongside members of his troupe in productions such as EL LOKANDA (2020), SHAMSIYA W ARBA‘ KARASY (2021), EL BANK SARAQOUH (2022), MUTHALATH BARHOUMA (2023), and his latest play, THE EL SHAMASHIRGI FAMILY (2026).
